The power of a single breath!

We’ve all heard about the health benefits of meditation.  I’ve been practicing and teaching it in my programs for years.  The single most common “objection” to trying it is “it takes too much time out of my busy day.”

Today, you’re going to become practically an expert at it.  It’s going to take one minute!  OK, maybe three.

First, while you’re reading these words, take a deep breath in.  Try to breathe in through your nose if you can.

Next, hold that breath in your lungs for just a second or two (count to two if this helps), then exhale through pursed lips (as though you were playing the flute).

Again, breathe in through your nose another deep breath.  This time see if you can feel the breath down deep into your lungs so that your belly sticks out.  That’s called a belly breath.  That’s the way babies breathe.  It’s the way you used to breathe before the world got to you.

Hold it for a second or two.

Release and exhale gently through pursed lips (this time to the count of 1, 2, 3, 4).

One more time. Inhale, 1, 2, 3, 4, big deep, deep breath. Hold it (1, 2).  Exhale nice and easy 1, 2, 3, 4.

That’s pretty much the basics.  Now, do this again in about an hour. Take the few seconds and just do it.  Except next time, do it without reading the directions if you can and do it with your eyes closed.

The time after that, try it with a nice gentle piece of music playing.  Gradually you learn to use the time to clear your mind.  Once you’ve become good at that, you’ve become good at meditating and you can use that time to do affirmative thinking.  We’ll talk about that another time.

Peace and gratitude,
